[Mod’s note: But seriously, how does this happen?]

Two main things come to mind
1) Some comic shops (particularly the old unkempt ones) aren’t very female friendly and when you walk in, the store owner treats you like you’re some kind of alien who doesn’t know shit about comics and the usual customers sometimes behave inappropriately towards you. I have had experiences like this and it’s not fun, it’s awful and degrading and you want to punch everyone in there.
2) Comics are very male-dominated and some of the stuff that is displayed in some comic stores…. Well it’s very male oriented. They are filled with figures, statues, and other stuff that totally caters to men which sometimes isn’t very comfortable to be around with if you’re a woman. Lisa Simpson pretty much sums up how some women feel in some comic stores.
Fortunately not all comic stores are bad or run by basement dwelling nerds, I am fortunate to know two good comic stores in Seattle that are girl friendly and the people in there treat me with respect and are polite (and if a costumer gets out of line with me they put them in their place). Also in San Diego there is a Comics n’ Stuff store that I go to when I am there that is run by a woman and she has other women in her staff and the place is very female friendly and nice-looking.
Girl-Wonder has a list of Female Friendly Comic bookstores around the world, the list was made by women who were in said stores and found that they were comfortable and treated well there.
As to why all the female fans are in tumblr? Well I guess that we dominate here and there are some male fans too but we usually drive out the douchebro neckbeard kinds (because they don’t like all of teh gay and shipping and it offends their very delicate sensibilities).

My local comic store is Whatever Comics in Canterbury. It’s ran by a husband and wife duo, who are a lovely couple who endeavour to make the store as welcoming for all as they can. They are the main reason I don’t order my comics online. Men and women fans can always be found in their store. I hear stories of “boys club” comic book stores and just can’t imagine why people act like that.
