"Moving downwake through the Devachanic Realm at a speed of twenty-five dreams per second" - Warren Ellis

Hey so…

This post exploded again and I have been seeing some notes with people bandying about the term “comic book elitist,” so I thought I ought to address that.

Uh, dude, no.

I was honestly just surprised that the anon seemed not to know that the comics existed at all. There are a lot of comics I haven’t read. I could live a hundred years and have all the money in the world to spend on it and I would still be hard pressed to find the time to read every single Marvel comic. But I think that the basic understanding that these films are based on comics and that many those comics might have a hand full of fans independent of the films is not a huge thing to ask a person.

Also as they were anon and not especially nice in their phrasing so I feel I was fair being a bit snarky with them.

But the thing that I saw a couple of times that actually threw me was people saying that comics fans ought to welcome movie fans instead of acting hostile to them. Because from what I have seen they do. People write rec lists and answer asks about comic canon and I myself scroll tags and answer people’s questions I see posted for no other reason than that I like comics and I want to share them with people.

The thing that DOES bother us is when people act as thought seeing the films has taught them everything they could possibly know about a character and fuck anyone who says otherwise. And fair, if you just want to splash around in the MCU end of the pool that is awesome but you need to understand that their are a bunch of us swimming in 8ft of back issues and you are sharing the water with us. So please don’t piss in it. You can’t make blanket statements like “but Tony and Steve hate each other,” “Howard Stark is just misunderstood,” or “Antman sounds dumb, who the fuck cares about ants” without annoying the fuck out of some people.

Basically, there are a lot of incarnations of these characters and if you wanna talk like you know then put a qualifier on there like Movie!Tony would never be friends with Steve (I don’t agree but whatever) or Ultimates!Hank Pym is a bag of dicks (that I do agree with) because in a way, they are different characters who share names and traits but frequently would act/do/say drastically different things and acknowledging that will make you a pretty awesome fandom person.

I don’t care if you don’t want to read the comics, fine but you share the fandom and don’t assume someone is always talking about the movies and then rage about it when they tell you they aren’t.
