FF #1, by Jonathan Hickman & Steve Epting. I’d been interested in this book coming out ever since I’d heard about the new direction Hickman was planning on taking the Fantastic Four, and I have to say that as the first individual issue of a comic I have ever bought on/near it’s release, it didn’t disappoint. Hickman just knows how to write stories that grab me in very few pages. This issue was obviously setting up the new status quo, with a moment that almost read like “Previously on the Fantastic Four!” and that works well.
Epting is an artist I hadn’t seen before, but after only 23 pages, I think he’s great! A perfect fit for this.
My only problem with reading this book is the fact that now I have to buy the trades of Hickman’s Fantastic Four series, just so I know what’s going on. Although I’m sure I’ll enjoy those just as much as this!
I’ll definitely be carrying this on. Although if Marvel do their trademark “spam it with crossovers!” I don’t know how follow. I want this story, not Avengers, not X-Men, just this. So I hope it remains mostly self contained. But we’ll see!
